Conversations I: ‘Where Do Emeralds Come From?’ and Other Questions Answered by Gem Experts

New York/Tucson, Ariz., June 2, 2017. Every year in Tucson, Arizona, professional and hobbyist rock hounds descend on the desert to shop for gemstones. That’s because more than 40 individual shows dot the landscape at varying times from Jan. 25 to Feb. 13, offering loose gems, minerals, fossils, finished jewelry, and more for sale to store owners and some non-trade enthusiasts.

Before this year’s show, the JH team took to the streets of New York City to find out what burning questions collectors had about gemstones. Then we headed to the most prestigious of all the gem shows—the American Gem Trade Association’s GemFair Tucson, held Jan. 31 to Feb. 5—to get answers from some of the most well-respected gemological experts in the country.
