New York City. Feb. 26, 2021. Housebound designers like Stephanie Occhipinti dream of getting away, but Covid-19 restrictions ensure she remains grounded. So, to appease her travel-starved mind, her imagination kicked in—further fueled by some long-distance correspondence with a friend who lives in Iceland—to create a jewelry collection inspired by the land of fire and ice. Its name? Nordic Blue.

“I was lucky the jewelry had the opportunity to travel afar for its ‘close up’,” jokes Occhipinti about an imaginary trip her new styles took up north. “It had a fabulous time in Iceland being photographed while experiencing all of nature’s breathtaking and inspiring wonders. One day I will make it there, too.”

For sure, coronavirus times are making us all a little squirrely, but Occhipinti’s latest offerings are seriously appealing. Some 13 styles are made of wire-wrapped sterling silver and thick 22k–24k gold vermeil with organic-looking tumbled nuggets of turquoise and blue topaz as well as faceted rondels of labradorite. The effect has wide appeal thanks to chain links and mixed metal colors while maintaining “a timeless and casual elegant vibe,” explains the artist.

“[Nordic Blue] fits perfectly into my brand of nature-inspired jewelry. Turquoise with organic surfaces and accents of iridescent beads on textured golden links reflect the image of a vivid lagoon and the beauty of Iceland’s fractal coastlines, vast waterways, and frozen landscapes. Faceted icy blue gems cascade from delicate chains capturing the beauty of a shimmering waterfall.”

Occhipinti paints a vivid picture of what she’ll see in her impending visit to Iceland once we’re all free to move about the world again. The next best thing to traveling there now may be the wallet-friendly prices of her designs: retails start at just $50.
